The Presidential Election Commission of Korea Football Association (KFA) confirmed that Mr. Chung Mong-gyu, the only candidate registered for the KFA’s 54th presidential election, was elected as the new president of Korean football’s governing body. The decision was announced on Thursday, after the commission had qualified him as a member of the executive board.

Mr. Chung was the only candidate who applied for the presidency of KFA during the registration period from 21 to 23 December last year. According to the KFA Statutes (Article 23), if there is only one candidate the Election Commission shall examine whether the candidate has any reason of disqualification before designating the candidate as the president elect without putting it to a vote.

Therefore, Mr. Chung has been elected the 54th President of KFA by the commission, without having to go through a vote that would have taken place on 6 January. The decision took immediate effect on Thursday, with the president returning to the office after a month-long suspension since he registered for the candidacy on 2 December last year.

Mr. Chung is to begin his third tenure as KFA President officially on 27 January (until January 2025), after the approval of Korean Sport & Olympic Committee in due course.

Mr. Chung is also the president of Hyundai Development Company and owner of K League outfit Busan IPark FC. He began his career in football as the owner of Ulsan Hyundai FC in 1994, before becoming the president of the Korea Professional Football League in 2011.

Having won the election in January 2013 to become the 52nd president of KFA, Chung was reappointed unanimously in the election for the 53rd presidency in July 2016.
