Korea Football Association (KFA) has obtained the Pro Level membership of the AFC Coaching Convention, which is the certification system of coaching education approved by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The AFC sent an official letter on 21 April to inform the KFA that “the application for membership at the Pro Level of the AFC Coaching Convention has been considered and approved.” Amongst the AFC member associations, a total of five countries - Korea Republic, Australia, China PR, Japan and Qatar - have been granted the Pro Level membership of the AFC Coaching Convention.
The membership levels of the AFC Coaching Convention are divided into Pro, A and B Levels, which is similar to the levels of the coaching licences certified by the AFC. A member association with the Pro Level membership has the rights to host instruction sessions for coaching licences at Pro, A and B Levels. Likewise, a member association with the A Level may host sessions for coaching licences at A and B Levels, with a B Level member association to hold sessions for B Level coaching licences. A member association without an AFC Coaching Convention membership may not host any instruction sessions for the coaching licences (at any level) certified by the AFC, although they may hold sessions for coaching licences at C Level and below.
The AFC Coaching Convention is the certification system introduced by the governing body of Asian football in 2018, to encourage its member associations to meet minimum standards for quality coaching education and to improve and organise their own coaching education programmes for their specific needs. The AFC has implemented the system in order to improve the quality of coaching education so the Asian countries may be able to compete at the top level of world football.
The application process is as follows: A member association submits a detailed plan for coaching education at a particular level, before the AFC Coach Education Panel reviews the document and visits the member association to observe the coaching programme in action. The AFC Coach Education Panel then evaluates the programme to report the result to the AFC’s Technical Committee as well as the Executive Committee, who will make the final decision to approve an AFC Coaching Convention membership.
The KFA submitted the application for the Pro Level membership of the AFC Coaching Convention in September 2018. The AFC Coach Education Panel then visited the KFA to observe a Pro Level coach education course in December. Following the AFC’s recommendation for programme improvements, the KFA has finally obtained the membership this month.
The Education Team at the KFA plans to implement an advanced education system for Korean football to encourage coaching talents to compete on the global stage in the future.
