Korea Republic breeze past Philippines

Korea Republic women’s national team defeated the Philippines 3-0.

Choe Yuri, Ji Soyun and Jang Selgi struck in the second half, as Colin Bell’s side beat the Philippines 3-0 in a friendly staged at Icheon Sports Complex on Friday. After a goalless first half, substitute Choe opened the scoring for the hosts on 73 minutes, with Ji and Jang also on target in the closing minutes.

Korea Republic’s perfect record against the Philippines remained intact with the victory, which was their fifth win in as many encounters in the past. The sides will face each other once more in the same venue on Monday evening.

Bell opted for a 3-4-3 formation: centre forward Casey Phair flanked by Chun Garam and Ji Soyun; Cho Sohyun and Jang Selgi in midfield; Choo Hyojoo and Lee Eunyoung on the flanks.

Shim Seoyeon, Go Yoona and Lee Youngju started at the back, with Kim Jungmi between the sticks.

Korea Republic surged forward right from the off, with Chun Garam volleying her effort straight at Olivia McDaniel. But as the hosts struggled to break into the stubborn Philippine rearguard, they sought to create their chances with the wingers marauding on both flanks.

Casey Phair then began to take control up front. On 15 minutes, Chun Garam sent an inviting cross from the left that Phair managed to connect with a header just wide of the target. She broke into the right side of the area on 28 minutes, only to drag a low shot deflected by a defender and wide of the left post.

The hosts still struggled to break the deadlock after the half-hour mark, with both Ji Soyun and Choo Hyojoo trying their luck from the edge of the area. The closest they came to scoring was on the stroke of half time, when Chun Garam’s left-foot effort from the left side of the box ricocheted off the left post.

Bell rang a change up front during the interval as Choe Yuri came off the bench to replace Chun Garam. Choe made an instant impact after ten minutes, sending an inviting cross for Go Yoona to head just over the crossbar.

Korea Republic then missed a crucial opportunity three minutes later, when Choe intercepted the ball to break into the area with only McDaniel to beat. But the Philippines goalkeeper did well to deny the point-blank effort from the substitute.

The Taegeuk Nangja kept up the pressure with Choe Yuri, Casey Phair and Ji Soyun switching their positions in three pronged attack: Ji sat down to operate as a playmaker, for instance, with Choe and Phair working in tandem up front.

And it was substitute Choe that finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Choe intercepted the ball from Jessika Cowart to break into the left side of the area, before slotting a low shot past McDaniel to make up for the missed chance earlier in the period.

It did not take long for the women in red to double their advantage. A direct free-kick from the left edge of the area was taken by Ji Soyun, who curled the ball in off the right post to score her seventh international goal directly from free-kick – surpassing her previous record shared by Son Heungmin on six goals.

Ji was also involved in the third goal for the hosts with two minutes remaining, as the No10 sent a free-kick into the path of Moon Mira on the right side of the area. Moon found Jang Selgi lurking into the centre with a clever backheel, and Jang latched onto the rebound after her initial effort had been denied by the goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Nam Seungeun – a starlet who had featured prominently in the recent AFC U-20 Asian Cup – made her senior debut as a replacement for Shim Seoyeon deep into added time.
