The final squad for the Taeguk players who will be playing in the last two games of the World Cup Asian Qualifiers are finalized.
Coach Shin Taeyong held a press conference at the KFA Center at Sinmunro on August 14 and finalized 26 players who will be playing in the 9th and 10th match of the World Cup Asian Qualifiers prior to the World Cup Russia 2018. The entry for the match is 23 players. However, Coach Shin selected 26 players first, and will opt out 3 players when submitting the final entry prior to the game.
The National Team will have the match against Iran at Seoul World Cup Stadium on August 31, 9 pm. Then the team will move to Uzbekistan to have another match against Uzbekistan at 12 am, September 6.
Lee Dongguk, who is also known as ‘lion king’ was included in the squad. Lee Dongguk returned to the National Team after 2 years and 10 months since the friendly match against Costa Rica in October 2014 which was held during the early time of Steilike, the former coach. If Lee Dongguk plays in the game against Iran, he will be playing at the age of 38 years and 124 days old and will be recorded as the second oldest player who played in the game in the history of A match. Currently, the oldest player who played in the game is Kim Yongshik, recorded with 39 years and 274 days old.
There is also a surprize. Midfielder Kwon Kyungwon, who plays in Chinese Super League, Tianjin Quanjian as well as Kim Minjae who is in charge of central defense of Jeonbuk Hyundai are selected for the first time. Goalkeeper Cho Hyunwoo, who was summoned for the match against Qatar but could not be included in the game was also listed in the squad.
Veteran players such as Yeom Kihun and Lee Keunho are also joining the national team. In addition, players who play in Europe such as Son Heungmin and Ki Sungyueng are in the squad without change. Son Heungin powered up condition while playing in the league last weekend and Ki Sungyeung is concentrating on the rehabilitation training. Hwang Heechan and Kwon Changhun who also played under Coach Shin in the Olyimpic National Team were also summoned.
Currently, Korea is in 2nd ranking with 13 winning points (4 wins 1 tie 3 loss) followed by Iran (20 winning points, 6 wins 2 ties). Korea has only one point more than the 3rd ranking Uzbekistan (12 winning points, 4 wins 4 loss). In Asia, teams in the 1st and 2nd ranking in the group will be automatically qualified for the World Cup Finals, and the 3rd ranking team in each group will be decided its qualification by the play-offs.
