[FA Cup Quarterfinal] An unusual event for Mokpo City by defeating the 'Goliath' Seongnam

Mokpo City, the National League, made a miracle in the FA Cup.

Mokpo City won a victory 3-0 against Seongnam FC, the K League Challenge in the quarterfinal of the '2017 KEB Hana Bank FA Cup' which was held at Tancheon Stadium on August 9. The team had three goals in a row in the first half which led them to the complete victory. Mokpo City was qualified for the semifinal for the first time since its foundation and made a new record ever in its history. The National League turned out a team that is qualified for the semifinal at FA Cup for the first time in nine years since Goyang Kookmin Bank in 2008.

Mokpo City succeeded in scoring first point in the 2'. While the breakthrough of Jung Hoonsung, defense player of Seongnam fouled inside the penalty box, and the chief referee assigned a penalty kick to Mokpo City. Jung Hoonsung played as a kicker and ended the goal with a good countenance. Seungnam started counterattack, but was struggling without breaking defense of Mokpo City, which was playing in a 5-4-1 formation. Mokpo City placed only Kim Younguk, the offense player in the final frontier while positioning rest of players at rear and continuously put Seongnam in trouble.

Mokpo City, which made Seongnam powerless, was successful in getting an additional goal in the 24'. The cross lifted by Jeon Inwhan from left side was completed by back header of Lee Inkyu in front of the goal.

Seongnam substituted Oh Jangeun with Kim Dongchan at 48'. However, the team had to face risk one more time when Lee Changhoon walked-off the ground. Seongnam gained a freekick chance in front of the arc circle of the opponent team in the 59', but a shooting kicked by Hlohovsky bounced back after hitting defense wall. In the 60', Seongnam bet winning move by substituting Kim Dongki with Park Sungho. The latter half continued with one-sided offense of Seongnam but Mokpo City's defense was tough. Seongnam killed mobility as time passed. Kim Doohyun was substituted by Jo Jaecheol in the 74', but the flow of the game did not change much. The game ended with Mokpo City's victory 3-0.
There was another unusual event happened at Gwangyang Stadium. Busan IPark, the K-League Challenge Team was qualified for the semifinal after winning K-League Classic Jeonnam Dragons 3-1. Busan defeated Pohang Steelers 1-0 in the round of 32 and finally gained a ticket to the quarterfinal in the penalty shoot-out after a tie 0-0 against FC Seoul in the round of 16. Busan defeated K League Classic Teams three times in a row and showed the strength of the K-League Classic.

Busan gained the first goal in the 1' in the first half. Leo's shooting was connected to the own goal of Yang Joona at Jeonnam. In the 9', Kim Younguk gained an equalizer goal and the both team had an equal score, but Busan did not stop. Leo shook the goal net one more time in the 41' and it was followed by a wedging goal by Choi Seungin in the 75'. The impetuous Jeonnam played offensively but Busan kept the victory with strong defense.

Suwon Samsung, the winning team of FA cup last year, barely won Gwangju FC at home ground. Suwon dominated the game during the play but lost a winning goal to Jo Juyoung of Gwangju in the 57'. The problem solver of Suwon in risk was Santos who was substituted in the 80'. Santos grabbed a corner kick of Yeom Kihun in the 86' and successful to gain an equalizer goal with a fast left foot shooting. Suwon continued to get a tie-breaking goal until the extra time of the second half but it was not easy and the game was extended until overtime.

During the overtime, Suwon's continuous offense and Gwangju's tough defense were competitive. Santos received Yeom Kihun's pass and had a goal chance one more time in the 14' in the first half of overtime but the goal was missed. Santos, then sparked in the 10' in the second half of overtime. He kicked a ball to the cross lifted up by Kim Minu from left and successful to gain a tie-breaking goal. Due to multi goals gained by Santos, Suwon was able to win a victory 2-1 which enabled them to continue for a challenge towards victory of the FA cup twice in a row.

Ulsan Hyundai won Sangju FC 3-1 at home ground and confirmed its qualification for the semifinal. Ulsan led the game with Subotic's goal in the 20' but gave an equalizer to Sangju FC's Park Suchang in the 39'. However Ulsan continued to have an additional goal by Kim Insung in the 56', followed by a wedging goal of Orsic in the 79' and easily won a victory 3-1. On the other hand, Sangju FC struggled while sending off two players.
