Steilike's Team lost 2-3 in the away game in Qatar

Steilike's team was beaten in the away game in Qatar.

Korea National Football Team led by Ulrich Steilike was defeated in a match against Qatar National Football Team 2-3, in the round of 8 of Group A of the '2018 Russia World Cup Asian Qualifiers' held at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on June 14. In a previous match, Uzbekistan, which is 3rd ranking(winning score 12) was defeated by Iran, the 1st ranking(winning score 20) and Korea was barely able to keep 2nd ranking in group A with 13 winning scores.

Unlike in the last evaluation match against Iraq, Coach Steilike used 4-1-4-1 formation. Hwang Heechan(Salzburg) stood in the final frontier while Son Heungmin(Tottenham Hotspur), Ki Sungyueng(Swansea City), Lee Jaesung(Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors) and Ji Dongwon(Augsburg) lined up in the second frontier. Han Kookyoung(Al-Gharafa) defended the center and the back four defense line was composed by Kim Jinsu(Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors), Kwak Taehwi(FC Seoul), Jang Hyunsoo(Guangzhou R&F) and Choi Chulsoon(Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors). Kwoun Suntae(Kashima Antlers) wore the goalkeeper gloves.

After the 10', there was a gap between offense and defense of Korea team and there were less number of penetration into the risk area. In the 21', Lee Jaesung of Korea tried curled in a free-kick by left foot in the right side of the penalty box but it was blocked by the opponent goalkeeper's hand. The following attack was also blocked by defense. On the other hand, Qatar, which gradually expanded opportunities to attack, gained a free-kick chance in the forefront of arc circle of Korea in the 24'. Hassan Al-Haidos, the kicker, kick the ball strong and successful to get a goal.

Korea was shaken by the opponent's attack after the lost score. Moreover, Lee Keunho substituted Son Heung-min in the 34' due to Son's sudden injury. In the 39', Qatar's free-kick bounced back after hitting the offense wall and the team tried to get a goal once again while kicking a ball deep into the goal but it was blocked by Choi Chulsoon's offense. It was another risk for Korea. As for Korea team, Lee Keunho, accompanied by three offense players, made a shooting in the 41' but it slightly went beyond the right side of the goal. Ki Sungyueng's thunderous shooting in the 43' also went beside the goal. The first half ended Qatar's lead 1-0.

As the second half started, Korea had a risk. Qatar's Pedro Correia gave a pass from the right side of the penalty box to the center and it was connected by Hassan Al-Haidos's shooting in front of the goal. The ball missed the goal and shook a net next to the goal. Qatar recorded additional goal in the 51'. Akram Hassan Afif tried a shooting in the right side of the penalty box after the pass between 2 to 1 with colleagues, and the shooting went into Korea's goal. After the lost score, Korea gave a change while taking away Ji Dongwon and substituting Hwang Ilsoo.

Korea continued attack. In the free-kick opportunity gained in the 60', and the following corner-kick opportunity all became foundered. However, in the 62', a chasing goal was finally achieved. Lee Jaesung gave a pass from the right side of the penalty box to center, Ki Sungyueng connected the ball by one-touch shooting in the arc circle, and finally gained a goal. Korea became cheerful with a chasing goal which was achieved with effort. In the 70', a golden equalizer goal was gained. In the right side of the penalty box, Lee Keunho kicked a cross which was hit by Hwang Iloo by head on the other side and it was connected to the center. It was completely smoothly by Hwang Heechan.

With the two balancing goals, Korea's flow was recovered. The goal share taken by Qatar was also taken back. However, Korea was not able to block instant counterattack. In the 74', Hassan Al-Haidos recorded a third goal and Qatar led the game once again. Coach Steilike took away Han Kookyoung in the 79' and substitute Nam Taehee in order to strengthen defense force. However, the game flow did not change easily. Eventually, Korea lost to Qatar 2-3, and was not able to cut winless ring of away game to the final preliminary.
