[U-20 WC] Shin Taeyong's Team, Defeated by Portugal 1-3, failed to get qualified for the quarterfinal

A Challenge of Shin Taeyong's Team for the quarterfinal has been foundered.

The U-20 Korea National Team led by Shin Taeyong was defeated by Portugal 1-3 in the Round of 16 of 'FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea 2017' held at Cheonan Stadium on May 30. Korea, which entered the round of 16 while ranking 2nd in the Group A with 2 wins and 1 loss, had to complete the game without achieving its goal to enter the quarterfinal.

Coach Shin fought against Portugal with 4-4-2 formation. Ha Seungun (Yonsei University) and Cho Youngwook (Korea University) were positioned as two tops Lee Seungwoo (FC Barcelona Juvenil A), Lee Jinhyun (Sungkyunkwan University), Lee Seungmo (Pohang Steelers), Paik Seungho (FC Barcelona B) were positioned in the midfield. Yoon Jonggyu (FC Seoul), Lee Sangmin (Soongsil University), Jeong Taewook (Ajou University), Lee Youhyeon (Jeonnam Dragons) kept the back four and the goalkeeper gloves were in Song Bumkeun's (Korea University) hands.

Portugal dominated the game from the beginning. Diogo Goncalves, who is known as 'little Ronaldo' threatened Korea's defense while breaking through with dribbles in the 6'. In the 10', Portugal got the first goal. Yuri Ribeiro received a ball passed by Bruno Costa and tried an overlapping. Korea failed to cut it off. A cross lifted by Ribeiro from left was passed to Xadas near the arc, succeeded to get a goal.

Korea started counterattack. In the 16', Cho Youngwook, who received Lee Seungwoo's pass, kicked a shooting and shook the net, but it was defined as offside just before the goal. Five minutes later, Yoon Jonggyu from the left side broke through with dribbling and linked the goal to a shooting but the ball passed over the goal. In the 26', Cho Youngwook, Ha Seungwun and Lee Seungwoo tried to make an opportunity with one touch pass but failed to make the last connection. Cho Youngwook tried a shooting to a biased ball again but it was also blocked.

There was a chance following the risk. In the 27, Portugal succeeded to get a second goal with a fast counterattack. Cross lifted by Xande Silva from the right side bended while hitting Korea's defense. The ball passed to Bruno Costa who was positioned near the arc and smoothly made a successful goal. For the rest of time, Lee Seungwoo and Paik Seungho simultaneously gained chances for free kicks and Korea tried to get an equalizer goal opportunity by set piece but it was tough.

Coach Shin tried a change while substituting players. In the 54', Lee Youhyeun was taken away and Woo Chanyang was substituted. In the 56', Lee Sangheon substituted Ha Seungun. Cho Youngwook stood in the frontier and Lee Sangheon gave a strength in the center.

There was a chance for Korea too. In the 59', Lee Seungwoo drew a foul of Ruben Dias, the offense player of Portugal inside the arc. Paik Seungho's free kick slightly passed over the cross bar. Four minutes later, there was another good opportunity for free kick. Lee Seungmo induced a foul from the right side of the arc. Lee Sangheon tried a free kick this time, but the kick which aimed for the right corner of the goal, slightly passed over the cross bar.

Portugal's offense players, who were prepared with personal skills and speed, were not tired. In the 69', Xadas, who put the first goal, made a shooting while beating out Korean players and successful to gain the third goal of Portugal.

Korea tried an attack in order to get a recovery goal. In the 72', Lee Seungwoo's shooting in front of the goal was cut off by Portugal's goalkeeper, Diogo Costa. The first goal of Korea was finally gained in the 81'. A ball passed by Woo Chanyang was received by Lee Sangheon in the left side of the penalty area and succeeded to get a goal.

For the last substitute card, Coach Shin took away Paik Seungho and substituted Lee Jungmoon. It was a strategy to concentrate on getting a recovery goal for the rest of time while sending Jeong Taewook to front. In the 84', after the compete of Jeong Taewook's heading, Cho Youngwook had a chance for a shooting but it was blocked by the Portuguese defense. Korea kept aimed to get a goal during the 3 minutes of overtime, but the challenge ended in the round of 16.
