The U-20 National Team, led by Coach Shin Taeyong defeated Argentina 2-1 in the 2nd round of Group A league in the 'FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea 2017,' which was held at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on May 23. Korea had a victory over Guinea 3-0 in the 1st round on May 20 and is ranked 1st in the group with two wins. Korea has secured its position as 2nd ranking at the lowest in the group regardless of the result of the 3rd round against England on May 26, and has been qualified for the round of 16 in advance.

Coach Shin used 3-4-3 formation. Lee Seungwoo(FC Barcelona Juvenil A), Cho Youngwook(Korea University), Paik Seungho(FC Barcelona B) formed the defense line. Yoon Jonggyu(FC Seoul), Lee Sangheon(Ulsan Hyundai), Lee Jinhyun(Sungkyunkwan University), Lee Youhyun(Jeonnam Dragons) stood for the midfield. Lee Sangmin(Soongsil University), Kim Seungwoo(Yonsei University), Jeong Taewook(Ajou University) were positioned at the back three. The goal was kept by Song Bumkeun(Korea University).

As Coach Shin predicted a day before the game, the battle in the center was fierce from the beginning. Argentina played against offence through short passes from the center while Korea played against Argentina with pressure. Argentina made more offence opportunities at the beginning of the first half. In the 9', Ezequiel Ponce ran to the goal followed by Jose Conezni's freekick but the ball went beyond the goal.

While Argentina was struggling with one missing goal, Korea's pressure and breakthrough drove to the success. In the 18', Cho Youngwook pressured and took away the ball, passed it to Lee Seungwoo and started counterattack. Lee Seungwoo, with fast dribbles, broke through to the left side of the penalty area. When the goalkeeper came front, Lee Seungwoo made a successful goal with a shoot which passed just over the height of the goalkeeper.

As Korea got the first goal early, Argentina was in a rush. Argentina tried to put power in offence but Korea's defence force calmly blocked the offence. In the 24', Exequiel Palacios's mid-range shot was caught by Song Bumkeun and Conezni's shooting from the left side in the 39' was blocked by Song Bumkeun and caught by Kim Seungwoo.

In Korea's offence condition, Cho Youngwook's play was highlighted. Cho Youngwook took away the ball from Argentina's camps in the 38' and ran to the goal but the ball was blocked by the goalkeeper. The same situation was repeated two minutes later. Cho Youngwook was crashed with the goalkeeper while running towards the goal. It was goalkeeper's foul this time and was announced with a penalty kick. In the 42', Paik Seungho completely fooled the goalkeeper, kicked the ball in lower left side, and succeeded in getting a penalty kick.

A competitive condition of the last minute of the first half was continued throughout the second half. Argentina launched full-scale offensive in order to get a recovery goal and got a goal five minutes past the second half started. Marcelo Torres, who was substituted at the beginning of the second half, broke through Korea's defensive line, got a 1:1 chance with Song Bumkeum and made a successful goal. The mood of the game was even more heated.

Coach Shin changed the atmosphere by substituting the players. In the 52', Lee Sangheon was substituted by Lee Seungmo(Pohang Steelers) and Paik Seungho was substituted by Lim Minhyeok(FC Seoul) in the 73'. In the offence of Argentina, Korea tried counterattack with fast break through of Cho Youngwook and Lee Seungwoo but there was no more additional goal.

Argentina tried to get an equalizer goal while throwing 13 shootings during the second half. However, there was a continuous cooperative defense of Korean players as well as Song Bumkeun's blocking. There was dangerous risks continued to lost scores until the overtime but Korea's defense players did not loose its power. Supported by the Red Devil's roar, Korea kept leading 2-1 until 5 minutes of overtime and confirmed its qualification for the Round of 16.
